DIY Garage door repairs how easy actually is this job ?

Well i can tell you its not as easy as the advice on the internet and the very sketchy videos on you tube would have you believe.

If you try to fix garage door repairs yourself, you may end up causing another problem or making your situation even worse by doing the wrong thing. 

The internet is full of DIY advice on repairing garage doors and how supposedly easy it is. 

The problem is Its also extremely dangerous to attempt repairs on garage door springs and cables, they are under enormous tension which is something all this advice gives very little credence to.

If you do not have the correct knowledge or the necessary expertise, odds are that you will cause more damage instead of fixing the problem and quite possibly seriously injure yourself.

The other thing to bear in mind is people vastly underestimate their skill levels and tool kit.

However, let’s take a close look at a few garage door repair problem that should probably always be fixed by professional.

1. Bent Track

To make the movements of your garage door smooth, it goes up and down by rolling on the tracks. If these tracks become broken or bent, your garage door will not function property.

This is really a job for a professional who has the tools and expertise to do a proper repair.

3. Roller Replacement

One of the more common problems people face is having their garage door rollers bend or break. Since these mechanisms are constantly in motion as you open and close your door, they may eventually become worn out and need to be replaced. To do a replacement of rollers you also have to be capable of taking the tension off the main torsion spring, not an easy DIY task at all and very dangerous to attempt if you don't know what your doing.

If you decide to do this yourself, you might end up wasting a substantial amount of time on this repair and cause the spring to unravel possibly damaging it in the process. Dropping tension off a main spring suddenly is not only risky it can snap the entire coil.

4. Spring Replacement

Occasionally, one or more of the springs in your garage door may break and the door will not function as it used to. This may be frustrating and you might want to try to fix this problem yourself. 

However, without the proper training, the right tools and garage door equipment, replacing a spring can actually be very dangerous. To reduce risks to yourself, hire a garage door professional like us to come and do this job for you.

These springs which are readily available are extremely difficult to actually get back in place and past the door rollers and tracking. 

Also you need to get them past the sliding spring retention part inside the tracks and that's not easy if you don't know how to do this, once you have done all this you then need to feed them through an eyelet at the top and secure them.

5. Broken Cables

One of the most difficult and dangerous jobs you can attempt, loss of fingers are not uncommon among homeowners that get this wrong.

In order for your garage door to function correctly and safely, the cables on your door must be in working order. Since these cables are constantly under a lot of pressure from your garage door, it can be extremely dangerous if you do not know how to do this repair correctly and with the proper tools and equipment.

Repairing garage door cables requires a lot of expertise and knowledge.

When it comes to making garage door repairs it is usually safer to hire a professional. Not only will it save hours of your time, but you can also rest assured that the work will be done well.

Take this repair  job as a classic case of its far better to get someone in to do the repair.

Garador claim that when the cables break they can be replaced and the springs re-tensioned by pulling the cables across. 

Well not unless your superman they can't and yet these cables are sold every where as a DIY garage door repair fix.

With over 40 years experience i can categorically state that it can't be done this way. you need special equipment and tools to do it. I'v tried with two of us and we couldn't even get them close to re-attaching. 

Take out the cost of the cables and your only paying £75.00 for us to come and do the job for you. Its important for you not to over estimate your skill level and tool kit when thinking of repairing these doors.

Do you really want to send for parts that you may end up sending back because their the wrong parts, its something i hear time and time again from customers,

" i have the parts here i just can't fit them" only to find when i get their they are the wrongs parts anyway.

Very few people if any have the correct tools for the job and on top of that your going to risk losing a finger or two or worse an eye for around £75.00 to have it done for you.

Remember serious injury can occur from attempting to repair garage door cables and springs if you do not know what your doing. Its not uncommon for people to be killed or seriously injured attempting garage door repairs.
